How do you handle race conditions in a search autocomplete feature?

Imagine you're asking a friend to fetch you a book, but you change your mind and ask for a different one before they return. You need a way to tell them to ignore the first request. In programming, we use tools to cancel old requests when new ones come in, so we don't get the wrong book.
